Tour 4x4 in Merzouga Desert

In the heart of the Moroccan Sahara, there is a small village called Merzouga. This is the gateway to the Erg Chebbi dunes – one of the most impressive dune fields in the world.

A 4×4 tour is the best way to explore this vast and empty landscape. You can go at your own pace, stopping to take in the views or to photograph the amazing shifting sandscapes.

There are plenty of small Berber villages to visit along the way, where you can learn about the traditional way of life in this harsh environment. And, of course, no visit to the Sahara would be complete without a camel trek into the dunes to watch the sunset.

In the Merzouga Desert, take a 4×4 tour.

After breakfast, travel to the little settlements of Hassi Labied, Merzouga, and Khamlia, which are all located near the Erg Chebbi dunes. A visit to the garden in Hassi Labied will allow you to see the canal irrigation system. We proceed on the path toward Merzouga from here. Near Merzouga, you’ll get the opportunity to observe Dayet Srji Lake, which emerges in the spring and draws flocks of pink flamingos and other species; bird-watchers will like this tranquil setting.

We anticipate to see residents showing off their desert foxes on our approach to Kamlia. Desert reptiles and animals may also be encountered. In Khamlia, a settlement of black Sudanese slaves is known as the Slave Village. You will be greeted with a cup of whiskey Berber tea while listening to soulful Gnawa music.

Our next destination after leaving Khamlia is a panoramic vista of golden dunes near the Algerian border. Before moving on to meet a Nomad family who live in a Berber tent and look after a herd of cattle, goats, and camels, we may stop for a picnic lunch in the shade of a tree. While savoring the flavor of a wonderful cup of tea, you will be introduced to family members and learn about their way of life.

Following that, you will have the opportunity to see black volcanic rock places. Continuing on, you’ll arrive at the panorama at Yasmina Auberge, where the view of the dunes, as well as the neighboring lake, will wow you (springtime). Return to your hotel for lunch and some rest.
