Note: we booked this tour as a private trip by talking to the provider directly. It was more expensive, but we felt it was nice being able to go at our own pace.
We had a one of a kind experience taking a camel ride out to a campsite in the sahara desert at sunset. It was more like glamping than camping - fully plumbed bathroom and beds included in our private tent. In the evening, we had a traditional tagine meal and sat around a campfire, enjoying berber drums and song. We got to dance around the fire and learn to sing and play the drums ourselves as well - all under the cool, starry night sky. Sitting around the campsite encouraged us to talk to other tourists too and hear their experiences; it was a lot of fun. The following morning we woke up to catch the sun rise and enjoy a camel ride back.
Other highlights included seeing and feeding the monkeys peanuts in the cedar forest, trying on traditional berber clothing, visiting Atlas Studios, as well as climbing to see traditional earthern houses at Aït Benhaddou.
All of this was topped off by great insights about life in morrocco from our guide, Omar. We learned about the education system, farming, utility supplies, housing, growing food. Having a local guide made the experience that much more special! He was also flexible in catering to our needs, and the 4 wheel drive with AC made the lengthy car trips very relaxing.
One last note, expect to be eating a lot of tagines on this trip- they are delicious (but very heavy)
